Point Clouds & 3D Modeling

Turn captured data into useful spatial deliverables.

A point cloud records sampled geometry; a mesh connects surfaces into a model. Choose the deliverable around the task and downstream software, then confirm which outputs the selected scanner and processing workflow support.

Different outputs, different uses

Match the representation to the work.

Point clouds

Collections of 3D points describe captured geometry. Colorized clouds also carry appearance information and can support spatial review and downstream measurement.

Mesh models

Connected faces represent surfaces for visualization and model-based review. Mesh quality depends on the source coverage and reconstruction workflow.

Measurements and coordinates

Distances and coordinates are evaluated in compatible software. Confirm units, reference systems, control, and the project’s accuracy requirements before using results.

Exported deliverables

File support varies by product and software. A source recording, finished point cloud, textured model, and inspection report serve different purposes.

How it works

Review the data before you deliver it.

  1. 01

    Capture

Record enough views to cover the required surfaces.

  2. 02

    Process

Reconstruct, align, and clean the captured observations.

  3. 03

    Inspect

Review coverage, geometry, coordinate context, and relevant measurements.

  4. 04

    Export

Choose a supported format and check the file in the receiving software.

Point density and a visually convincing model do not by themselves establish measurement accuracy.

In practice

Inspect an actual downloadable point cloud.

Product workflows

Choose the product workflow for the required output.

Practical evaluation

Confirm the receiving software can use the result.

  • Coordinate context. Confirm units, the reference system, and alignment with any survey control.
  • Geometry and completeness. Check required surfaces, gaps, noise, and duplicated geometry before delivery.
  • Appearance and size. Assess color quality, file size, and practical performance in the receiving application.
  • Output scope. Confirm the format, attributes, model type, and report requirements before processing.

Questions about point clouds and models

Is the MX-100 BAG sample a finished 3D model?

It is a source recording requiring compatible MX-100 processing software. The quick start guide describes reconstruction and alignment. View the guide and sample →

Does every model produce every listed output?

Outputs depend on the scanner, processing software, licensing, and selected workflow. Use the product page and format guide to confirm the deliverable you need.

Where are point clouds used?
