Engineering Surveying

Portable LiDAR capture for engineering surveys.

Document accessible site geometry and turn field observations into spatial data for engineering review. Plan the required control, coordinate system, and tolerances alongside the scanning route.

The project challenge

Connect site coverage with survey requirements.

Piping and steel structures at the Yingkou industrial facility documented with handheld LiDAR
Industrial piping and steel structures at the Yingkou facility, documented in the linked project article.

Industrial layouts, overhead structures, and connected indoor and outdoor spaces can be difficult to document from a small number of positions. A handheld route can add dense spatial context while the survey plan defines how that data is referenced and checked.

Useful deliverables

Define the record your team needs.

Site point clouds

Review visible structures, equipment, and surrounding geometry in a shared spatial record.

Referenced measurements

Agree control and independent checks before relying on dimensions for engineering decisions.

Agreed deliverables

Confirm units, coordinates, attributes, and file formats with the receiving engineering team.

From planning to handover

A workflow for engineering surveying.

  1. 01

    Define the survey

Specify extent, reference system, control, tolerances, and required files.

  2. 02

    Capture connected areas

Plan overlapping routes around structures and accessible equipment.

  3. 03

    Process and check

Review registration, coverage, and agreement with project control.

  4. 04

    Deliver and document

Export the agreed data with coordinate information and validation notes.

Project requirements

Agree these requirements before capture.

  • Control strategy. Define how the scan will be tied to the project reference and independently checked.
  • Visibility. Identify surfaces hidden by plant, pipework, or access restrictions.
  • Sensor selection. Assess coverage, reflectivity conditions, and useful range for the actual site.
  • Acceptance checks. Agree the required evidence of accuracy and completeness before fieldwork.

Engineering Surveying questions

Does a point cloud replace project survey control?

Define the control and validation method for the intended use. Dense geometry and a stated sensor specification alone do not establish project accuracy.

Which sample should I evaluate first?

The Cobra S LAS sample lets your team inspect a processed colorized point cloud. Review its coordinate notes before combining it with other project data.
